2009 MANAWATU SECONDARY (years 9-13) AND INTERMEDIATE (years 7 and 8) TEAMS INTERSCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS – THE QUALIFIER FOR THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

  1. The tournament will be held in the cafeteria of Longburn Adventist College, Walkers Rd, on Thursday, 6 August.

  1. Two separate tournaments will be held; one for secondary students (years 9-13) and one for years 7-8 (intermediate). Both tournaments will go all day. The event is for students attending an educational institution ie no home schooled students.

  1. Last year’s winners were: Intermediate – Monrad and Secondary – a tie between Wanganui HS and PNBHS B team.

  1. The tournament will be run by Martin Sims, on behalf of the NZ Chess Federation.

  1. The winning secondary and intermediate team will represent the Manawatu at the New Zealand championships to be held 26-27 September.

  1. Teams are of four players and they play in order of known playing strength. Board order must not be changed once the event starts.

  2. The entry fee is $16.00 per team. This must be paid before the start of play. Cheques can be made out to Palmerston North Boys’ High.

  3. Schools can enter a maximum of TWO teams per school per event. If you enter more than one team make sure your A team contains your top 4 players as the key purpose of the event is to find a Manawatu representative and you want your school accurately represented. As we need ONE team to represent the Manawatu there could be playoffs if teams are tied at the end. As a result players must be available until the final result is known.

  4. The winning team will receive a trophy which they hold until next year.

  5. Please be at the venue by 9.15am for a players meeting. The approximate finish time is somewhere between 2.30pm and 3.00pm depending on entries and format.

  6. There is plenty of parking in the grounds.

  7. The format, number of rounds and length of games will be based on the number of entries. Ideally the event will be a round robin as this is the fairest but numbers will decide the format. Two things: (i) it will NOT be a knock out so if you lose in one round you still have a chance and (ii) whatever format is used, all players will be involved all day.

  8. The full rules of chess will apply. This includes touch move and it would help if the participants were familiar with en passant and castling as these cause most problems. I will have plenty of helpers available to sort out any confusion. The official rules of chess can be found at http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook and scroll down to section E.I Laws of Chess. En passant is article 3.7d and castling is 3.8aii.

Another problem is players not knowing how to mate with King and Queen versus King. This is a win for the King and Queen but the player a Queen up must demonstrate that they know what they are doing and mate within 50 moves of the last capture or pawn move. Again, consult the laws of chess.

  9. Each school must be accompanied by an adult (teacher or parent) who stays with the team.

  10. There is no food available at the school and no shops close by. Players and adults need to bring all food with them. We only have a short lunch break. There is a petrol station a couple of minutes away in Longburn.

  11. Players should be in school uniform if you have one.

  12. Entries close on Monday 3 August but, for planning purposes, I would prefer to receive entries as soon as possible.

  13. To enter please send an email to Martin Sims at simsm@pnbhs.school.nz with the following information:

School name

Teacher name – a contact name

Teacher telephone contact number/email that is read regularly – preferably email that is read daily

Number of teams you would like to enter

I am away in Europe for term 2 on sabbatical. I will be reading my school email once a week. I will be in contact once I return at the very start of term 3.

Regards and looking forward to seeing you

Finally, 3 key pieces of information

In entering you are committing yourself/your school to representing the Manawatu in the national finals. If the first place team declines then the second place team will be invited.

Schools must pay the entry fee ($16 per team), either before the day or on the day.

Each school must come with an adult – either a teacher or a parent. The adult must stay with their students the whole time.
